Match Report:
The train's encounter against Chalvey Sports was our 7th competitive match of the 2023/24 season, with the team involved in the East Berkshire Football League's Premier Division. This outing was the first time we had faced long-time EBFL member, Chalvey, in competitive action.
A first-half of nearly chances for the team would be highlighted by Nadim Gharabli's nearly-moment via his head, flashing a header just wide from close range, whilst Jon Watkins and Phil Newport both went close in the game after a nice sequence of play, whilst Nathan Mindomba's run on the right byline resulted in a a shot that slammed the outside of the post.
With chances missed, Chalvey would score the opening goal in the 30th minute when on the counter they put a ball over the top of the defensive line, with their attacker challenged by Halsall in goal when one-on-one, with the ball somehow falling nicely for the attacker to eventually tap home into an empty net.
A second goal for the same player arrived in the second-half after a lengthy delay in play whilst the referee tried to calm down a Chalvey member on the sideline who was using racist language against our team, which after all this picked up with a corner that was headed home from close range - frustrating as the award for the corner doesn't go out of play and the referee has made a call from near the halfway line to award the set-piece when Halsall cleared the ball out for a throw. A truly game changing moment.
The game rounded out in the 80th minute when a sloppy giveaway in defence saw the Chalvey player score a 3rd from range with a fine strike from far out, securing the win for the visitors on a frustrating day of missed chances for the team.
Next up for the train, we hosted Richfield Rovers in RDSL Division 3, whilst our next fixture in the EBFL Premier Division sees us host Britwell United at Calcot Recreation Ground on Saturday 23rd September 2023.
Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:
"There's only a few things to cover from this game against Chalvey. On our own look at the game, we were wasteful in front of goal and should have won this game based on the chances created. We had 5 new players making their first appearances for the team, so that fluidity wasn't on show and we struggled for that finishing touch as a result. Then what happens when you can't score, it allows other teams in, which is what happened. Each game is a step in the right direction in our development though, so we can learn and grow from this in the weeks ahead for sure to get everyone up to speed.
As for the other part, it is the ugly side of local football. A Chalvey member, a spectator who used to be their Manager, was an absolute disgrace all afternoon. Throwing abuse on the sideline all game, including racist remarks aimed at our players, wasn't enough as he came onto the pitch at the end of the game and thought it was acceptable to assault one of our players, before drawing an object from his pocket with the intent to harm our player. A report is in with the County FA and quite honestly this individual needs to stay far away from all type of sporting and social events, it is completely unacceptable behaviour that soured the game for us."
