Match Report:

The train's encounter against Brothers United was the team's 10th match in pre-season ahead of the 2022/23 season, with the team taking on fellow RDSL Division 3 opponents. This was the 3rd time we faced Brothers, with the team facing them twice RDSL Division 4 last season.

A game of 4 goals opened up in the 23rd minute and it was Brothers who opened up the scoring after a loose ball into midfield saw a Brothers player pick up the ball and play in their Number 17, who turned whilst his back was at goal, and lobbed Robert Austin in goal from 30-yards-out, catching the train completely off guard.

A second goal for Brothers took just 5 minutes to arrive and started when a counter attack saw Brothers freed down the left wing, with a cut back at goal seeing a simple tap-in from just a few yards out, as the team in black and white doubled their lead.

The lead was reduced in the 36th minute and started when Liam Bowbrick was fouled on the right wing after playing a quick ball down the line. Cleared out, the team reset for a set-piece, which was guided towards the centre of the penalty area by Tom Williams and converted via the head of Phil Newport, with the game going in 2-1 at half-time.

The lone goal in the second-half secured the win for Brothers and arrived during the 71st minute when the train's corner kick ultimately ended up in a counter attack which saw an attacker put through on goal, with the shot looping high and over an advancing keeper.

The result means that in our 10th pre-season outing, we completed our longest run of games before the start of a season, with the team having a mix and varity of results as we prepare for our first Sunday League outing in RDSL Division 3 in late September.

Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:

"Our pre-season outing against Brothers wasn't the day we had hoped for, it wasn't up to scratch and highlighted what the team needs to work on ahead of the season. Our opponents played a good match, moved the ball well and quickly with some good passing sequences, and were fully deserving of their win.

The game itself, we were on top during the opening 25-minutes of the game and created some good opportunities, did well to move the ball with our midfielders, which is why the first goal for Brothers was killer as it completely flipped the script of the game. We fell apart for a 10 minute period and it cost us the game, whilst in the second-half we applied a lot of pressure, though was just not our day, and hopefully a massive wakeup call after a back and forth pre-season with a largely new group of players.

I'd like to thank James and the team at Brothers for the game! We're looking forward to our league games next season in what looks like a strong Division 3!"
