Match Report:

The Train's encounter against Marlow United was our 2nd competitive fixture of the 2025/26 season, with the team competing in Thames Valley Premier League (TVPL) Division One. This was our first ever encounter against Marlow, who were runaway winners of TVPL Division 3 in 2024/25.

There was an early lead for the hosts after 4 minutes on the clock, coming from a free-kick after Mark Bush committed a foul just outside the edge of the penalty area, which led to a low left-footed free-kick beat Jamie Halsall in goal.

The Train began mounting chances, with a Kaao Ka cutback across the byline not turned home by anyone in gold, before in the 12th minute Leon Mannion had the ball in the net when he beat the goalkeeper to a through ball, but was adjudged to be offside (when the Number 9 was onside). This was a precursor to Marlow extending their lead in the 17th minute when their Number 7 and 8 combined at the edge of the box to allow a low drive to hit the back of the net.

The third goal in a chance filled first-half arrived in the 23rd minute and was a product of route one football. Halsall in goal launched a long kick forward after the team shielded the ball out for a goal kick, with the long kick flicked on by Mannion to Connor Anderson, who had the beating of Marlow's right back before finishing well at the near post for his second goal of the season!

The second-half followed suit of the first-half, with chances flowing for both teams. In the 55th minute Marlow won a penalty kick after Eme Boateng brought down Marlow's Number 8, though on replay the free-kick occurred outside the penalty area, which was a relief as Marlow missed the resulting free-kick when the taker fired well wide on the ground. At the other end of the pitch, the team had a golden chance when Mannion was played through down the right flank, but Marlow's goalkeeper did just enough at point blank range to stop the shot.

Marlow eventually broke away in the team, scoring goals 3 and 4 in similar fashion, picking through balls and beating the offside trap, before composed finished took the game to 4-1 in the 73rd minute.

The final goal of the game came in the 79th minute and was for The Train in gold. Some good work down the right by Anderson and Luke Follington set up Anderson providing a cross-field ball across to Nadim Gharabli on the left. Gharabli would size up a lofted pass into the penalty area, with Sam Rodriguez controlling the ball expertly before calmly finishing - with Rodriguez scoring his first goal for the club!

Despite the numerous chances throughout the game, Hype Train succumb to defeat against a top Marlow outfit, on what was a tiny 3G pitch.

Next up, The Train continue the 2025/26 season on 13th September 2025, hosting Cookham Dean FC, in Thames Valley Premier League's Division One.

Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:

"The game against Marlow was a tough, tight contest for both teams. Going a goal down early on is always tough to come back from, and we kind of followed the same hiccups from our first game, so we have a lot to work on to start stronger in games, in what is a tough division.

We did have a host of chances, and to be honest on another day the game goes another way if our finishing and luck was slightly improved, but that's football and in Division One we are already finding out that tight margins decide games. Well done to Marlow on the win, and best of luck for the season."
