Match Report:
The Train's encounter against Prospect was our 27th fixture of the 2024/25 season in the East Berkshire Football League, with the team competing in EBFL's Division One. This was the reversal of the league encounter last December, with the hosts winning 1-0 on the road.
In a quick start to the game, The Train took the lead with 4 minutes on the clock. After winning a free-kick, Chris Marshall stepped up to deliver a deep free-kick from his own half that was guided right onto the head of Ashley Rockall, who looped a header over the Prospect goalkeeper for the lead.
Within 3 minutes of the opening goal, the game was level due to a mistake at the back. A floated in corner was lost in the air due to the setting sun, with Robert Austin dropping the set-piece across the line for the equaliser.
The team's lead was restored in the 23rd minute of the game, with great work down the right flank by Anwar Mmanga saw the full back run the right channel, before cutting in with the ball, and teeing up Phil Newport, who on the spin, hit home the ball on his left in what was a clever finish by our Number 9.
Just how the game drew level the first time, during the 28th minute of the game another Prospect corner kick flew directly in at the back-post, with a host of bodies charging into the back of the net, though the ball had already crossed the line before there was a touch via the back of a Prospect defender.
In the second-half, Prospect were reduced to 10-men on the 59th minute after their goalkeeper was shown a straight red card after handling the ball outside the area, which prevented Conall Gorman going through on goal. A host of several chances via crosses and set-pieces came to little as a compact Prospect team scored the winning effort in the 90th minute against the run of play when their Number 5 completed a hat-trick with a tap in after a deflected low cross.
Next up, The Train are in EBFL Division One action against Old Windsor FC Reserves at Waingels College in Reading on Saturday 12th April 2025.
