Match Report:

The Train's encounter against Real Saracens was our 16th fixture of the 2024/25 season in the East Berkshire Football League, with the team competing in EBFL's Division One in our first away game of 2025. This was our reverse league encounter against Saracens this season, with the team running out 4-3 winners at home at Waingels in the league in 2024.

The team took a 2-0 lead into half-time, with two first-time goal scorers netting for the first time. First, during the 11th minute a pin-point Lucas Coe ball over the top reached Manny Cudjoe on the left wing, who made an inside run before placing the ball over the onrushing Saracens keeper, lobbing the shot stopper. Second, Connor Anderson scored on his first competitive start for The Train when Phil Newport's flicked header was saved, before the falling ball was swept home comfortably by Anderson in the 17th minute. There was plenty more opportunities to add to the score in the first-half, but Eme Boateng set himself up for miss of the season contenders on several occasions.

Into the second-half, talisman Phil Newport added a brace, first in the 51st minute when we were awarded a penalty when the referee deemed a Saracens defender had handled the ball after Newport's shot - with the Number 9 converting the spot-kick via the goalkeeper's hand. Then, in the 64th minute good work on the right wing by Brad Burles-Nash led to a deep cross to Newport that was headed and saved by the Saracens shot stopper, though the Newport was converted by Newport at the second time of asking for the team's 4th goal.

Substitutes had a big impact on proceeding too, with Luke Follington adding a brace of brilliant finishes for the team. During the 70th minute, Follington and Newport played a nice one-two on the right which freed Follington, with the attacker lobbing the opposing goalkeeper from range! The brace was achieved then during the 73rd minute when Anwar Mmanga won the ball high up the pitch, teeing up Follington on the right side of the box, drilling home a first-time effort into the bottom-right corner!

The rout was completed by another substitute, Mmanga, in the 76th minute, when a through ball from deep by Mitchell Saunders reached the full back, who ran towards goal and made no mistake with a clinical finish in the bottom corner to score his second competitive goal for the club!

The win secured our 6th victory in EBFL Division One this season, whilst the win also secured our first clean sheet of the season.

Next up, The Train host Barton Rovers in EBFL Division One at Waingels College on Saturday 25th January 2025.
