Match Report:
The Train's encounter against Old Windsor was our 12th fixture of the 2024/25 season in the East Berkshire Football League, with the team competing in the quarter-finals of the Slough Town Cup (Junior section). This was our first encounter against any Langley FC outfit, with the game taking place in heavy rain and wind due to storm Bert hitting the UK.
The team would take a 1-0 lead heading into half-time when in the 31st minute, a quick throw in by Conall Gorman on the left wing reached Phil Newport on the byline, who then squared the ball for Mark Bush to convert into an empty net for his first goal at the club! Langley would be reduced to 10-men before the half-time interval when their right winger saw a second yellow card for dissent.
In the second-half, Langley equalised in the 52nd minute after they won a free-kick right on the edge of the penalty area, with the set-piece shot initially saved but only parried back into danger, allowing Langley to win the second ball and putting the ball into an empty net.
The Train restored our lead in the 57th minute thanks to Phil Newport converting the rebound to a penalty which was initially saved, with the Number 9 taken down when played through on goal by the Langley goalkeeper. The crucial 3rd goal for the team would arrive in the 71st minute when Newport again would cut the ball from the byline to Nadim Gharabli, who set himself before curling the ball into the top left corner to extend our lead.
Langley did have one final chance to get back into the game in the 77th minute when they were awarded a penalty of their own when their left winger danced into the penalty area and went to ground - there was no contact and the player slipped and clipped his own legs - but we're not blaming the ref due to a crowded penalty area. Langley would convert the penalty off the post as the ball trickled across the line.
The result means that in our debut Slough Town Cup season, we have reached the semi-final of the Junior competition for the first time, and will face Taplow United Swans in 2025 for a place in the final at Slough Town FC's Arbour Park.
