Match Report:
The Train's encounter against Barton Rovers was our 17th fixture of the 2024/25 season in the East Berkshire Football League, with the team competing in EBFL's Division One in our second home game of 2025. This was our reverse league encounter against Barton this season, with the team running out 2-1 winners away from home last October, with Shay Edwards and Lucas Coe scoring set-pieces against Barton at Theale Green School.
After probing and peppering the Barton goal for the opening stages of the game, the opening goal of the game arrived during the 28th minute when a well worked move down our left flank saw Conall Gorman and Shay Edwards combine, with Edwards cutting in at the edge of the box and squaring the ball to Lucas Coe, who from 20-yards-out, fired a strong shot from range to beat the keeper and opening the scoring.
The game went into the half-time break 1-0, though we found daylight during the 52nd minute with a second goal, starting when Ashley Rockall headed back a clearance from the Barton goalkeeper into the feet of Edwards. The Number 9 then waited before finding Mitchell Saunders, who then returned the ball to Edwards at the edge of the box, allowing a calm and composed shot to cushion sweetly into the bottom right to double the lead.
The team's 3rd and final goal of the day during the 57th minute was worth the wait, with a well worked team goal that involved most the squad! The ball moved across the pitch starting with Leo Pereira at left back, to Eme Boateng on the right, with Boateng finding Connor Anderson, who then found Coe infield. Coe then had the time to play a forward pass into Saunders, who then found the feet of Edwards inside the penalty area, whose only touch was to lay the ball off to Nadim Gharabli to sweep home a low strike to take the game away from the visitors.
Barton did manage a goal of their own during the 72nd minute to ruin our chances of a clean sheet, and did so in sensational fashion after a tackle by their left back freed their winger, who just inside his own half launched an unreal strike that veered and lobbed Robert Austin in goal.
More chances for The Train to further extended the lead did present themselves, though most notably Luke Follington hit the bar from point blank range after a cut-back across goal by Obeydah Abdulwahab. The win sees us remain in 5th place in EBFL Division One on 21 points after our 7th win of the campaign.
Next up, The Train travel to Old Windsor FC Reserves in the second round of the Ascot & Fielden Charity Cup on Saturday 1st February 2025.
