Player of the Month - Phil Newport:
Our Player of the Month award for April 2021 is our only our second monthly award given out, with Sam Bolwell the departing POTM from October 2020. The award was chosen by the club's management team, with all future monthly awards being voted on by the team as a whole.
With the East Berks Football League resuming in April, as well as HTFC forming the Reading Sunday Social League with Caversham United, the club competed on both fronts throughout the month, competing in five matches in total, twice in the EBFL and three times in the RSSL
Newport featured in all five of Hype Train's fixtures, four times as a starter and once off the bench, with the attacker putting in hard-working performances over back-to-back days against Hounslow Wanderers in EBFL Division One, with Newport winning a penalty for the team in an energetic performance. This work ethic was replicated against Woodley Saints in our maiden Sunday League fixture.
Newport then managed the first two of his three assists during April against Southbank FC in the RSS, both headed flick-ons that fell to Graham High and Tae Eom, with both scoring on their debuts for the team. Southbank was Newport's best outing and the first time playing out wide.
The squad rounded out our April as a substitute against EBFL rivals, Stoke Poges Saints FC, before a fifth and final appearance against Rose & Thistle FC in a 1-1 draw, with Newport playing on the left of midfield again, doing brilliantly to win the free-kick that Jack Reddings converted for our equaliser.
Manager, Robert Austin, presented Newport with the award (pictured above) after the game against Rose & Thistle on Sunday 25th April 2021.
Thoughts from Player Manager, Robert Austin:
"The return of grassroots football this past has been a lot of work, but has brought a lot of excitement and energy back to the lives of so many of our squad and one of the players who goes out of his to be involved however and whenever he can is Phil.
Whether up top or out wide, Phil has put in tireless shifts and has the most attacking goal returns than anyone in the squad. No, he wasn't able to score, but he has made a lot of positive contributions in games, as well as showing good development since joining us last summer, that have both made him a good cog in the machine to have at the club.
We've had to grind a lot of games and defend really well and I'm not sure Phil has put many feet wrong when on the pitch. I'd just like to take the time to thank all the players in my squad that have come back to play in uncertain times and hopefully we can collectively push forward and have an even better May."
