Match Report:

The Train's encounter against Wraysbury FC was our 5th competitive fixture of the 2025/26 season, with the team competing in Thames Valley Premier League (TVPL) Division One. This was our second encounter against Wraysbury FC's Saturday team, having previously played them in the BBFA Charles Twelftree Trophy at Staines Town FC during the 2021/22 season.

The opening goal of the game arrived in the 7th minute, with the Train sleepy in allowing Wraysbury all the time in the world to carry the ball from defence, before one long ball ghosted through the team and their left winger did well to stay alert as he scooped the ball over Callum Gibbons in goal for the lead.

A host of chances presented themselves for the squad after the opening goal, with Leon Mannion and Connor Anderson both cutting inside the penalty area to fire narrowly wide of the far post, before Aiden Iqbal robbed a Wraysbury defender of the ball when playing out from the back in the 37th minute, but when one-on-one, saw his shot excellently saved. Just minutes later in the 40th minute the team in Gold were awarded a penalty when Mannion crossed the ball towards the back post, with the ball bouncing off the arm of the Wraysbury captain to win a penalty - though, Mannion saw his low effort saved by the home shot-stopper, who was having a good half.

The lead was doubled in the 48th minute of the game, starting when a long ball down the right flank for the hosts saw the Wraysbury Number 7 clip the heels of Mark Bush who was shielding the ball down the line, though play was allowed to continue as their winger strode into the box, forcing a double save from Gibbons in goal, before the rebound was moved across the penalty area, with the ball volleyed in when cut back.

In the 58th minute of the game after moving Anderson into the middle of the park, the first action from a goal kick was for the midfielder to head the ball back towards the goal, allowing Mannion to control the ball down with one touch, shrugging off his marker in the process, before firing a low drive past the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 2-1 with over half an hour to play.

After much endeavour to draw level, an opportunity presented itself in the 73rd minute, starting when a Kaao Ka corner was headed away, but back into Ka's path on the left of the pitch. Ka would then find the feet of Mannion, who did well to wriggle past several markers before freeing a pass forward to Conall Gorman to then place a shot home on his right - in a twist, the offside flag was raised, and the goal disallowed despite in review on VEO being onside, and a free-kick awarded at the edge of the box as Mannion was dragged down after playing the pass. After a manic sequence, Anderson stepped up to slot home the set-piece into the bottom left corner, drawing the game back to 2-2!

A chance to win the game for The Train was denied in the 85th minute of the game, starting when a looping pass from Anderson reached Jabal Hassanali's on the right wing. Hassanali was patient and waited for Ka to collect the ball at the edge of the box, with Wraysbury half clearing the ball when Ka wriggled through on goal - this led to the ball falling to Anderson outside the penalty area, who forced a save from the opposition keeper, with the rebound headed home by Mannion. Only after the goal went in did the Wraysbury club linesman raise his flag, with Mannion played onside upon review when Anderson struck the ball, denying the squad their comeback. Wraysbury would go on to put the ball in at the other end of the pitch, but the flag was raised when their last man on the rebound was ahead of the last defender.

This all led to the points being shared between two good sides in a competitive game in TVPL Division One.

Next up, The Train continue the 2025/26 season on 4th October 2025, hosting Mortimer FC, in Thames Valley Premier League's Division One.

Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:

"Our longest away trip of the season was against a good opposition that were organised and tested us until the end and were loud and quick out the blocks, so it was a game and a team we had to get to grips with early. On the whole, the squad played well and should have came away with the maximum points, but there's a few tweaks we are working on to improve on week-to-week, and collectively are disappointed to not have won, but it good that the squad are looking at these moments in the right way and wanting more.

The first-half was a tough watch, conceding the early goal before missing a few critical chances, including a penalty, before we came alive in the second-half to end the game strong. The game should have stayed at 1-0, their second goal was a foul on our defender, and when we had drawn level the opposition linesmen ensured a point for the hosts when he ruled out a header that upon review was onside, so we were just unlucky on the day to not have got more - though, the opposition were good and had their moments to take the game away from us in spells.

We wish Wraysbury the best of luck for the season!"
