Match Report:
The Train's encounter against Wraysbury FC was our 12th competitive fixture of the 2025/26 season, with the team competing in Thames Valley Premier League (TVPL) Division One. This was our 3rd competitive match against Wraysbury, with our previous encounter ending 2-2 in the reverse league fixture in October!
The game would head into the half-time goalless, though there were a trio of chances that could have seen ourselves, playing a first game at Ryeish Green Sports Hub. First in the opening 10 minutes, Jordi Ebanda nearly caught the Wraysbury goalkeeper cold after forcing a save following a giveaway at the edge of the box. In the 21st minute, Connor Anderson would then hit the bar from point blank range after pressing a loose giveaway, whilst just before half-time, Ebanda created his own opportunity and forced a good save at the near-post as we were unable to make the breakthrough.
The second-half saw The Train fighting an uphill battle after gifting the visitors their winning goals. The first came after we failed to clear the ball following a corner kick, which kept the team under pressure, which allowed a shot at the edge of the box which was initially saved well by Jamie Halsall in goal, which was followed up well by a Wraysbury player to tap home into an empty net. Minutes later in the 62nd minute, a ball over the top saw the visitors win a penalty after we misjudged the ball in the air, which saw a tackle in the penalty area and the pen award, which was converted coolly.
Chasing a goal back in the game, in the 68th minute Anwar Mmanga would win a corner after having a cross deflected following an overlapping run, with the following Connor coming into the penalty area by Connor Stratford, who delivered a low cross at the near-post, which was attacked well and converted into the back of the net expertly by Connor Anderson, reducing the deficit to 2-1!
A glorious chance opened up in the final minute of the game, with Luke Follington playing Mmanga down the line on the right side after an overlap, with Mmanga delivering an inch-perfect ball into the six-yard-line, with Ashley Rockall charging to meet the ball, but the connecting on the ball led to the finish somehow going agonisingly wide - ultimately a game for The Train where our missed opportunities in a close game cost us in our first game of the year.
Next up, The Train travel to Fleet Spurs on February 7th 2026, in Thames Valley Premier League's Division One.
Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:
"This was only our 3rd game in 3 months, so to say that we were rusty and out of practise was very much true. It felt like, despite some good moments and a hatful of chances, that we were a little off the pace of the game, and ultimately we created a nervy situation for ourselves on the day.
The visitors played their part and put in a solid defensive shift and in our opinion shaded the day, though ultimately we gave them their biggest opportunities and they punished us with a quick fire brace that was too much to come back from!
Heads up to all of our players - we have a top group and will bounce back strong in the weeks ahead. Best of luck to Wraysbury for the rest of the season."
