Player of the Month - Phil Newport:
Our Player of the Month award for January 2022 is our 7th monthly award awarded, with Phil Newport winning the player vote at the club - receiving 100% of the votes from players that voted, besides his own, with the forward playing winning the award for the first time during the 2021/22 season, and a third time overall.
Featuring in all 7 games over the course of the month across Saturday and Sunday, Newport first provided both assists for Paul Hatfield in the club's competition Berks & Bucks Sunday Trophy clash against Give Back FC. The club put in a great shift, ultimately losing 4-2, with Newport involved in both goals scored.
The following weekend, the club had a sole match on Sunday 16th January 2022 as we hosted NFFT FC in RDSL Division 4, running out 3-1 winners at a makeshift home at Atrium Health Club. This was a special day for Newport, netting his first hat-trick for the club, scoring a brace of headers in the first-half, before sealing the win in the final minutes with a smart finish past the opposing keeper.
Lightning would strike twice for Newport, with a second treble the immediate game after on Saturday 22nd January 2022, with the team comfortably winning 8-0 against Sandhurst Town U23's. Newport scored 2 of the 3 goals in the first-half from close range after neat through balls, before completing his hat-trick with the team's 5th goal of the afternoon when he was assisted by Paul Hatfield from a corner kick. In total for the Sandhurst game, Newport total 5 attacking returns, also providing assists for Leon Mannion and Jon Watkins as we progressed to the Last 16 of the EBFL Presidents Cup.
The following day on Sunday January 23rd 2022, Newport added to his goal tally, scoring from the penalty spot in a crunch RDSL Division 4 game against Reading United, with the team unfortunately losing 2-1 in a tight, competitive game.
The last week of the month saw the team bow out of the EBFL League Cup against Iver Heath on Saturday 29th January, with Newport scoring the club's only goal in a 3-1 home defeat - netting a low and powerful free-kick.
The day after, the free-kick bug remained with Newport as the club's Number 11 scored a brace of free-kicks against Brothers United in RDSL Division 4 action on Sunday 30th January 2022. The club went on to win 2-0 against Brothers, and you can view both dead-ball attempts below.
This means for the month of January, Newport was involved in 70% of the club's goals for the month, contributing towards 14 of the 20 goals scored throughout January (10 goals, 4 assists).
Club Chairman, Sam Austin, presented Newport with the award after the team's dramatic 3-2 victory over Harts of Bracknell in the EBFL Presidents Cup on Saturday 5th February 2022.
Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:
"Starting back up in January saw the club tasked with some huge league and cup games as we looked to continue our strong start to the season before the break for Christmas. The club came back and lot of a couple of cup games, and whilst we haven't had the exact momentum we had due to a few injuries to key players, and early availability this year, we've been able to rely on Phil to help carry the team at the top end of the pitch.
Phil's a dedicated trainer, works hard each session and scored some very good goals, especially from free-kicks, which is something that the team have been practising in recent months to his benefit. Phil's output means he has carried the bulk of the team's goals for the month, with the team behind him trying our best to create chances, especially as Phil's strike partner Leon was out injured for most of the month.
Thanks to Phil for his continued commitment to the team, he is a worthy winner of our accolade for the month, and here's hoping the team and Phil can kick on as we enter a busy period of league fixtures throughout February!"
