Player of the Month - Phil Newport:

Our Player of the Month award for May 2021 is our only our third monthly award given out, with Phil Newport retaining the POTM award after earning the accolade in April 2021 too.

The month of May started out with a 4-0 triumph against Hambleden in EBFL Division One on Saturday 1st of May, with Phil putting in a good performance on the wing, before the team played out a 3-0 loss against Old Windsor FC's Reserves a week later on Saturday 8th May 2021.

The following day on Sunday 9th May 2021, Newport was a star performer as he became only the second player to register three assists in a single game when he provided a trio of goals against New England in a 5-0 win at Linear Park in the Reading Sunday Social League (RSSL). Newport also scored the team's third goal after being played in behind the New England defence by Callum Parr-Jones.

The team's form in the RSSL continued in our 5th outing against Tilehurst Titans in a 7-2 win at the Ibis Club on Sunday 16th May - again, our attacker was in amongst the goals. First, Newport scored a looping header after a wonderful cross from Sam Bolwell, then converted a second header from a Rod Stevens free-kick - Newport's first headed goals for the club. In addition to the brace, he assisted the 6th goal, teeing up Stefan Sukara from close range to bury the Titans.

Our final RSSL game of the month came against Thames Valley Railway at Calcot Recreation Ground on Sunday 23rd May, with Newport causing the Railway defence havoc all morning, and was unlucky not to add to his tally for the month.

The team rounded out May against Townmead FC at home in EBFL Division One on Saturday 29th May, with Newport scoring the team's lone goal in a 2-1 defeat - a loss that was wiped off the record books after Townmead pulled out of the league after they fielded a number of ineligible players in our game at Calcot Recreation Ground.

Club Chairman, Sam Austin, presented Newport with the award (pictured above) after the team's 5-3 win against Caversham United on Sunday 6th June 2021.

Thoughts from Player Manager, Robert Austin:

"We made the change to bring in a player vote for the award and this month there was a two-horse race between Phil and Jon Watkins. Both players had incredible months on the pitch, with both of them pillars of how to act and conduct themselves on and off the pitch.

Phil in particular has been growing in his role at the club and has found a position and system that is getting the best out of his attributes - he's finally adding the goals and assists that back-up his excellent work rate and energy in games.

The entire team were sending great messages about Phil to our management team, and he deserves every applause for being giving this latest badge of honour as we enter the final month of the season."
